Brown or Rainbow Hammerhead Trout
I thought it was just an Urban Legend when I heard old timers talking about catching different species of freshwater fish with a hammerhead just like the shark only smaller. Some legends claim that smaller hammerhead sharks have either swam up river to spawn with rainbow trout while other legends have them infiltrating hatcheries and having a spawning party. It seems science has a different story to tell. These hammerhead freshwater fish are more likely left over from the Jurassic Period, very similar to the Sturgeon. Most scientists believe that the ancestors of the hammerhead freshwater fish were most likely not much larger than they are today which could be a big part of the reason for the very small populations today. It is a well known fact that all lager gamefish love feasting on all species of hammerhead freshwater fish. But finally I can say without a doubt it is true. They did (and some still do) exist! So far I have only been able to locate one specimen but am searching for others. Sadly I assume we will find some of these fish are not just endangered but extinct. On a much more serious note, this is a slow sinking swimbait with very nice serpentine action.
